US national debt by day, with the laws and events behind it
This table shows the total US public debt outstanding for every day Treasury reported it from 2016 to 2026, with the daily and monthly change. Major laws, crises and executive orders are marked on the chart so you can see what moved the number. Federal spending and contract rollups sit in the other tabs.
How to use it
- Scroll the chart or sort the table by date, total debt or daily change.
- Hover a marker to see the law or event on that date.
- Switch tabs for monthly spending, top contract awards and agency rollups.
Methodology and sources
Daily totals come from the U.S. Treasury Debt to the Penny dataset. Monthly spending comes from Treasury fiscal data, and contract and award rollups come from USAspending.gov. Event markers are hand-curated from congress.gov and the Federal Register. Figures are shown as published and are not adjusted for inflation.
FAQ
Where does the daily debt figure come from?
The U.S. Treasury Debt to the Penny dataset, which reports total public debt outstanding each business day.
Why are some days missing?
Treasury reports only on business days, so weekends and federal holidays have no entry.
Are the numbers adjusted for inflation?
No. Figures are nominal dollars as Treasury published them.
